The Only Real Gift We Need

Colossians 3:2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on the earth.

One man. One woman and a blue hymnal.

Oscar Haab lived a lifetime before he made the call. It was a simple request, really. He wanted to buy the new blue hymnal and Kay was the name in the bulletin taking orders. Kay took the call outside her classroom where she had taught for 17 years.  When the blue hymnal arrived, Kay called and offered to deliver it personally.  She arrived after school, they sat and chatted, the rest was history.

Oscar, a successful businessman, investor and philanthropist was well known in the Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor communities. Oscar ran Haab"s Restaurant with his brother, Otto since the 1930's. Always ahead of the curve, Oscar & Otto did well and the Lord blessed them. They, in turn, gave back to the community they loved.  Just the previous fall Oscar lost his beloved wife, Ethel and his business partner, Otto, within two days. Kay had read the obituaries and offered her condolences. A schoolteacher and librarian, she knew a thing or two about being organized. She began helping Oscar with driving, opening and responding to his mail and the huge amount of charity requests he received daily.  It was 1981 and the pair begain dating.

They married July 10, 1991 at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Kay continued Oscar's wishes and learned how to do things day by day. The Lord called Oscar Home in November 29, 1995. The next year The Oscar & Keturah Haab Foundation was created to honor the legacies of Oscar & Kay to share the love of Jesus far and wide.

The Mission & The Reach

Over the last 30 years, the Haab Foundation has given prayers, volunteer support and grants that total into the millions with Matthew 25:40 in mind, "Whatever you did for the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me."

Their legacy starts in Ypsilanti with the young mothers who want the best for their baby, to the reformed prisoners who  learn to live in a community with grace and love. It spreads to Ann Arbor where children with learning disabilities grow as they learn about Jesus and excel in school. The mission of Jesus spreads through local congregations as they learn and grow, "senders" and "goers" learn about mission trips around the world. The foundation pays for Sunday School materials to be translated in Central and South America. Even farther, the foundation funds medical missionaries in Kenya and helps the new seminary in India get up and running with the proper books and supplies.

Help us continue for the next thirty years to advance faith, education, and mission through strategic grants and partnerships with charities that reflect Christian community service and Christ-centered values.
